Investing in Climate Resilience Through Innovation and Livelihoods
The Green Fund Africa is an investment partner for the Udgoon Sustainable Development Initiative’s Climate Action and Livelihood Resilience program. To support local adaptation and decision-making, USDI installs weather stations at schools and universities, enabling students to collect data and communities to access early warning systems. These efforts combine research and real-time climate data with practical learning opportunities.
Beyond data, USDI empowers communities to implement creative water and land management strategies, offers vocational training, and supports small-scale business development. Their programming builds long-term climate resilience through financial literacy, sustainable income generation, and inclusive planning across Garissa Township and beyond.

Empowering Climate-Smart Learning with SIGs Place
In Migori County, Kenya, the HBCU Green Fund is supporting Special Interest Groups Place (SIGs Place) to nurture a new generation of young climate leaders through WeatherWise – Smart Pupils for Smart Agriculture.
Piloted at Nyanchabo and Getonganya Junior Schools, smart weather stations have transformed the schools into Weather and Climate Information Services (WCIS) hubs that provide real-time data on rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind, and atmospheric pressure and 12–24-hour local weather forecasts to support timely decision-making. Pupils collect and interpret real-time weather data and share it with their families to guide agricultural activities.
“Now I can tell my parents the best time to plant our crops,” says a WeatherWise pupil.
Teachers use the updates to plan lessons and outdoor activities, while communities make more informed farming decisions, reducing losses linked to erratic weather.
With the HBCU Green Fund’s support, SIGs Place is demonstrating how local innovation can drive climate resilience and education outcomes — a scalable model for climate-justice investment in African schools.
