Eco Spring Break
Where Service Meets Sustainability
HBCU Eco Spring Break
Turn Your Spring Break into a Mission for Climate Action and Community Impact
Each spring, the HBCU Green Fund invites student leaders from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to participate in Eco Spring Break — a transformational alternative to traditional spring break activities. Instead of heading to beaches or resorts, our Fellows and volunteers spend a week immersed in service-learning projects that advance environmental justice, sustainability, and community empowerment.
What is Eco Spring Break?
Eco Spring Break is an opportunity for HBCU students to make a real impact on climate action, while gaining hands-on experience in community organizing, sustainable development, and environmental stewardship. Participants collaborate with local organizations, work on green infrastructure projects, and engage in workshops and cultural exchange activities that deepen their understanding of environmental and social issues.
Highlights of the experience

Climate Resilience Projects
Assist with initiatives like urban gardens, tree plantings, energy audits, and green building projects.

Community Engagement
Work alongside residents, schools, and local leaders to promote sustainable practices and climate awareness.

Skill Building
Gain experience in project management, leadership, advocacy, and sustainable development.

Cultural Immersion
Explore the rich cultural history of the communities we serve, connecting environmental justice to civil rights and social justice movements.

Networking
Build relationships with environmental leaders, sustainability experts, and other passionate students from across the country.
Why It Matters:
Communities of color are on the frontlines of climate change impacts, yet often left out of the decision-making and resource pipelines. Eco Spring Break empowers HBCU students to lead, innovate, and advocate for a more just and sustainable future — for their campuses, their communities, and the world.
Who Can Participate?
Eco Spring Break is open to HBCU Green Fund Fellows as well as other HBCU students and alumni who are passionate about environmental justice and eager to make a difference. Spots are limited, and participants are selected based on their commitment, leadership potential, and interest in sustainability.

Help Us Empower the Next Generation of Climate Leaders
Eco Spring Break equips HBCU students with the tools, experiences, and inspiration they need to lead in the fight for climate justice. Every donation — big or small — helps fund travel, lodging, materials, and project costs so students can serve communities without financial barriers.
Invest in the leaders our planet needs.
