WHAT WE DO

HBCU Community Hubs

HBCU Community Hubs are innovative spaces created to promote sustainability, entrepreneurship, and community resilience in underserved neighborhoods. Located near historically Black colleges and universities, these hubs include features like plant-based cafés, farmers markets, pop-up shops for local artisans, and outdoor event areas. Designed as eco-friendly, multi-use spaces, the hubs serve as gathering places for students and residents to access healthy food, green jobs training, wellness programs, and climate education, while supporting local economic development and environmental justice.

BUILDING RESILIENT THRIVING  COMMUNITIES

HBCU COMMUNITY HUBS

Reconnecting Communities with Green Spaces & Opportunity

We often think of nature as something that exists outside of cities—but that doesn’t have to be our reality. Urban communities deserve green spaces, clean energy, and economic opportunities that improve quality of life and climate resilience.

That’s why The Green Fund is creating Community Hubs—localized sustainability initiatives designed to empower students, uplift communities, and build a greener, healthier future for all.

Through mentorship, workforce training, internships, and student-led projects, we are bridging the gap between environmental sustainability and economic opportunity, ensuring that communities thrive, not just survive.

HBCU Green Fund Hub

A Model for Future Community Hubs

What We’re Doing

The HBCU Green Fund Hub is a bold new sustainability and economic development initiative being developed in the historic English Avenue/Vine City community of West Atlanta. Designed as a community-centered resource, the Hub will promote environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and economic empowerment through green infrastructure and cooperative business models. Housed in an innovative container build, the space will feature a plant-forward smoothie and soup shop, a multipurpose stage for markets and events, and direct access to sustainability services like energy audits, retrofits, and clean energy solutions including solar power and EV charging. With support from Morehouse College’s Institute for Cooperative Economic Leadership (ICLS), the Hub will also serve as an incubator for eco-entrepreneurs, offering resources for urban agriculture, composting, and advocacy to help build a greener, more self-sustaining future for the community.

Other work we are doing as a part of the West Atlanta Project:

✔ Hands-on sustainability training for HBCU students, preparing them for careers in climate, energy, and urban planning
✔ Environmental justice initiatives to address air pollution, energy access, and public health in West Atlanta
✔ Green workforce development through mentorship, internships, and job placement in renewable energy and STEM

Through partnerships like the Bezos Earth Fund, we are working to build a future where every community has access to green spaces and all the benefits they bring. These hubs make cities healthier, more sustainable, and better prepared for the future of climate resilience.

The West Atlanta Project is a partnership between the HBCU Green Fund, Bezos Earth Fund, US ACE Coalition, Land Peace Foundation, and the BIPOC Climate Scholars Project.

Expanding HBCU Community Hubs Nationwide

We’re expanding HBCU Community Hubs nationwide to bring clean energy, careers, and environmental justice to more HBCU communities—join us in scaling this impact.

The HBCU Green Fund Hub is just the beginning. Our vision is to establish HBCU Community Hubs in urban neighborhoods surrounding HBCU campuses, bringing environmental justice, clean energy access, and career-building opportunities to more communities in need.

We’re calling on funders, partners, and changemakers to help us scale this work to other HBCU campuses and create a national network of sustainability-driven communities.
