THE GREEN FUND AFRICA: Zimbabwe
Hwedza Biogas Project
Empowering women in rural Zimbabwe with biogas technology to enhance clean energy access, reduce deforestation, and create income-generating opportunities.
Emerald Climate Hub launched the Hwedza Biogas Project to introduce sustainable biogas energy to rural Zimbabwean communities, focusing on women. Through training and live demonstration, women learned to use biogas cookstoves—offering a clean, efficient alternative to firewood. The initiative, which addresses deforestation, health, and economic challenges, promotes circular rural economies and entrepreneurship. Women are now producing biogas slurry fertilizer and participating in the construction and maintenance of digesters. The project boosts agricultural productivity and builds a resilient, low-carbon future led by women innovators.
